List of the Day = 10 Rules of Life * Pierre Lassonde
10 Rules of Life Lassonde Wisdom at the University of Utah

On a recent trip to visit our son at the University of Utah, a sign posted in the dorm common area titled “10 Rules of Life by Pierre Lassonde” offered a little dose of wisdom posted for all to see. Occasionally a GOOD list hits my radar and pushes the pause button for me, and I find myself considering, dreaming, and ultimately taking a few dance steps toward generating something thoughtful. I do love a good list. Stumbling upon an enticing top ten list (or whatever number) inspires me, prompting me to reflect on my daily actions. Because we are talking about “List of the Day”, here is the list:
10 Rules of Life by Pierre Lassonde (a little drop of wisdom)
- Say “Thank you”
- Never Miss an Occasion to Throw a Party!
- What is it You Want Most in Life?
- Live Your Passion
- Feed Your Soul
- Explore Your Faith
- See for Yourself the Earth is Round
- Give Faith a Fighting Chance
- Leave a Better World Behind
- Keep Your Speeches Under Ten Minutes
Applying 10 Rules to Improve Life & Increase Inner Smile…
Staring up at the sign, I took a deep breath, remembered to slow down, and these thoughts hit:
- Say Thank You. That landed for me: #1 Operating Instruction. Period.
- Celebrate! Even (perhaps especially) the small moments. But also celebrate the big ones. I don’t tend to throw a party. A milestone hits, I tend to smile, nod, and carry on. I want to throw more parties.
- Take some time every day or week or month or whatever and think about What I Want Most in Life. Truth is… I don’t always know. When I don’t know, I grab pen and paper, set a timer for 15 minutes, and free write – brain dump stream of consciousness style – beginning with wondering what I want and writing whatever comes to mind. Sometimes I repeat a one word expletive for a few lines, but in the end something good always rolls off the pen. (Exercise called “Pages” from The Artist’s Way)
Soul Searching Continued…
- Live Your Passion: Life, society, expectations… bills, responsibilities, and of course the “shoulds”: I should help… should be doing… should care about… should look like… It’s like there’s a conspiracy against living your passion which undoubtedly affects not knowing what your passion is anymore. Janet Atwood wrote a book called The Passion Test that is worth reading AND worth putting in the effort of completing the test. Read the whole book because the examples help clarify the thought process. Additionally, get quiet and take time to do the exercises well. It’s a start, a framework, a barometer. And I’m going to do this again. (BTW – My recently published book is a product of living into passion)
- Feed Soul: Nature overnight for me, dancing with my eyes closed to soundtrack of Greatest American Showman, listen to thought-provoking, love-inspiring speakers, read Untethered Soul again – because these actions feed my soul…
- Explore Your Faith: Realizing it’s been awhile since I’ve done this.
- Travel. Stop listening to all the news, get out there, and see for myself. Be open because my backyard is really small.
- & 9. Give Faith a Fighting Chance & Leave a Better World Behind. Absolutely. Feels like hope in action to me and I’m all in.
10. Keep Your Speeches Under 10 Minutes. Amen.
Thank you! Now let’s dance…
In the spirit of this list, I want to say thank you to Pierre Lassonde, and to the designers of the Lassonde commons at the U because without you, I wouldn’t have seen this list. And also thank YOU for reading. I am signing off so I can blast either “Come Alive” or “This is Me” from that aforementioned soundtrack and dance – eyes closed – like the wind.
